Role Purpose
The Intermediate Accountant / Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for managing a portfolio of clients and delivering high-quality bookkeeping, payroll and BAS services with minimal supervision.
This role suits an accountant with 3–5 years experience who can work independently, apply professional judgment, identify issues proactively and support junior team members, while ensuring all work meets compliance and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Client Portfolio Management
- Manage a portfolio of AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS clients across bookkeeping, payroll and BAS services
- Act as a key point of contact for assigned clients
- Build strong, professional client relationships based on attention to detail, trust and accuracy
- Understand each clients business model, systems and industry risks
Bookkeeping & Financial Management
- Oversee and complete end-to-end bookkeeping for AUSTRALIAN clients
- Review and finalise bank, credit card, loan and balance sheet reconciliations
- Ensure general ledger accuracy and integrity
- Identify and resolve discrepancies, errors and process gaps
- Prepare accurate monthly and quarterly financial reports for internal review
Payroll & Superannuation
- Manage payroll processing for multiple clients
- Ensure payroll is compliant with awards, agreements and Fair Work requirements
- Review and reconcile payroll, superannuation and leave balances
- Manage STP compliance and resolve payroll-related issues
- Identify payroll risks and escalate where required
BAS & Compliance
- Prepare AUSTRALIAN BAS and IAS workpapers for review and lodgement
- Ensure GST, PAYG and superannuation obligations are accurate and compliant
- Maintain audit-ready client files and supporting documentation
- Identify compliance issues and recommend corrective actions
Review & Quality Control
- Review work completed by junior team members if required.
- Provide constructive feedback and coaching if required.
- Ensure adherence to practice systems, SOPs and quality checklists
- Contribute to continuous improvement of internal processes
Advisory Support
- Identify trends, risks and opportunities in client financial data
- Assist with cash flow analysis, budgeting and reporting
- Support clients in improving systems, processes and financial clarity
- Escalate advisory opportunities or risks to the Practice Director or Senior Accountant
Skills & Experience
Essential
- 3–5 years experience in an accounting or bookkeeping practice. Australian experience preferred.
- Strong practical experience with Xero and/or QuickBooks Online
- Solid understanding of BAS, GST and payroll compliance
- Experience managing multiple clients and deadlines
- Ability to work independently and exercise professional judgment
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desirable
- Experience with hospitality or retail clients
- Experience with Dext, Hubdoc, MYOB, Asana, Square, payroll integrations and add-ons
- Experience reviewing junior staff work
- Exposure to advisory-style reporting and analysis
