Overview:

  • The client is a structural engineering consultancy based in Perth, Western Australia. We provide structural engineering services for residential, light-commercial and small industrial projects throughout Western Australia.
  • Our work commonly includes new homes, residential alterations and additions, patios, carports, decks, sheds, workshops, mezzanines, retaining walls, concrete footings and slabs, steel structures, timber-framed construction and modifications to existing buildings.

Position Summary

  • The Structural Draftsperson will work under the direction of the Structural Engineer to convert engineering mark-ups, sketches, calculations and design instructions into complete structural drawing packages. 
  • The successful candidate must be highly competent in AutoCAD, able to interpret architectural drawings and have a practical understanding of
    building construction.
  • The role requires careful attention to detail, good communication and the discipline to seek clarification whenever structural information is incomplete or unclear. 
  • The Structural Draftsperson is responsible for accurately documenting
    the engineer's design. Structural design decisions and final engineering approval remain the responsibility of the Structural Engineer.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review architectural drawings, engineering mark-ups, specifications, photographs and other project information.
  • Prepare structural engineering drawings using AutoCAD in accordance with Spanstruct drafting standards.
  • Produce structural plans, elevations, sections, schedules and construction details.
  • Draft concrete slabs and footings, masonry walls and lintels, timber framing, structural steelwork, patios, carports,  decks, sheds, portal frames, mezzanines, retaining walls and alterations to existing buildings.
  • Accurately incorporate engineering comments, sketches and PDF mark-ups into drawing revisions.
  • Coordinate structural drawings with architectural documentation and identify missing information, inconsistencies and conflicts.
  • Refer technical questions, design conflicts and proposed changes to the Structural Engineer before incorporating them.
  • Ensure plans, sections, details, schedules, member labels, dimensions and notes are coordinated throughout the drawing set.
  • Maintain drawing revision records, file names and document-control procedures.
  • Produce issue-ready PDF drawing sets and maintain orderly AutoCAD files.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining Spanstruct standard details, notes, blocks and templates.
  • Attend online coordination and drawing-review meetings when required and communicate progress promptly.
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrated structural drafting experience using AutoCAD.
  • Ability to produce clear and professional structural drawing packages from engineering mark-ups and instructions.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Practical understanding of concrete, structural steel, timber and masonry construction.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies between plans, sections, schedules and details.
  • Good written and spoken English for technical communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple small projects and revisions simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently while following the Structural Engineer's instructions.
  • Willingness to ask questions rather than make unsupported structural assumptions.
  • Reliable computer, internet connection and software suitable for remote AutoCAD drafting.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience preparing structural engineering drawings for Australian residential or light-commercial projects.
  • Familiarity with Australian construction terminology, materials, the National Construction Code and commonly used Australian Standards.
  • Experience with Western Australian masonry construction, timber framing, concrete slabs and structural steelwork.
  • Experience using Bluebeam Revu or similar PDF mark-up software.
    Experience with AutoCAD external references, sheet organisation and drawing standards.
  • Experience drafting alterations to existing buildings where site information may be limited.
  • Revit or 3D modelling experience may be beneficial but is not essential.

Quality Expectations

  • All engineer mark-ups have been addressed.
  • Member labels correspond with schedules and details.
  • Plans, elevations, sections and details are consistent.
  • Dimensions, levels and drawing references are correct.
  • Superseded information has been removed and revisions correctly recorded.
  • Architectural and structural information is clearly distinguished.
  • No unapproved structural assumptions have been introduced.
  • The drawing set is clear, coordinated and suitable for construction once approved.
Qualifications
  • A diploma, certificate, associate degree or equivalent qualification in drafting, civil engineering technology, building design or a related discipline is preferred. Applicants with strong demonstrated structural drafting experience and a high-quality portfolio may also be considered.

  • Proposed working hours, time-zone availability and expected hourly rate or salary.
  • Notice period or availability to commence and professional referees.
Shortlisted applicants may be required to complete a practical drafting assessment. The assessment will consider drafting accuracy, AutoCAD organisation, construction understanding, communication, presentation quality and the ability to identify missing or conflicting information.
