Role Purpose:

The Clinical Coder will be responsible for the accurate and timely classification of admitted patient episodes, ensuring compliance with Australian Coding Standards, ICD-10-AM, ACHI, and applicable Department of Health and health fund requirements.

IMPORTANT: This role requires a minimum of 3 years of clinical coding experience, with Australian private hospital experience strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Review discharged patient records and assign ICD-10-AM diagnosis and ACHI procedure codes
• Apply the Australian Coding Standards and hospital Coding Policy
• Determine principal and additional diagnoses
• Assign appropriate care types for AR-DRG, AN-SNAP, and Australian Mental Health Care Classification
• Code mental health, addiction, withdrawal management, detoxification, and related physical conditions
• Review clinical documentation and raise queries with clinicians when clarification is required
• Prepare, validate, and reconcile HCP data
• Investigate coding errors, rejections, and discrepancies
• Ensure coding is completed within required timeframes
• Participate in coding audits and quality improvement initiatives
• Maintain strict confidentiality and compliance with Australian privacy and information security requirements

Requirements

ESSENTIAL:

• Minimum 3 years of clinical coding experience
• Experience in an Australian private hospital
• Recognised clinical coding qualification – HIMAA, tertiary Health Information Management degree, or equivalent
• Strong proficiency in ICD-10-AM, ACHI, and Australian Coding Standards
• Experience coding admitted patient episodes
• Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
• Excellent written and verbal English
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• Secure and reliable remote working environment

HIGHLY PREFERRED:

• Knowledge of AR-DRG and private health insurance funding models
• Experience with HCP reporting
• Experience coding mental health, addiction, or subacute episodes
• Knowledge of Australian Mental Health Care Classification or AN-SNAP
• Experience with CareRight and/or DC2Vue
